Clinical Corner

Empowering through innovation & education.
The Macy Catheter has been designed for comfort and safety by utilizing a small flexible silicone shaft and retention balloon. The device is able to remain safely and comfortably in the rectum and deliver medications and liquids to the distal rectum, while at the same time being easily expelled upon defecation. The catheter is first inserted into the rectum just past the rectal sphincter, and the soft retention balloon is inflated with water via the balloon inflation valve. Being small and flexible, the retention balloon exerts very little pressure on the rectal membrane, making it safe and comfortable for the patient. A separate medication valve provides for the delivery of medication and liquids within the catheter for entry into the rectum. The retention balloon can easily be deflated for manual removal of the catheter, for example if the patient prefers removal prior to defecation.
